Resistance training can take several forms. Choosing the right approach means considering the goal and person rather than applying a stereotype about age, sex, equipment, or appearance.
Myth: Only Free Weights Count
Machines, bands, free weights, and suitable bodyweight exercises can all have roles. The ACSM guidance emphasizes appropriate, consistent training rather than one compulsory tool.
A machine is not automatically nonfunctional, and an unstable exercise is not automatically more advanced or useful.
Myth: The Same Program Fits Everyone of the Same Age
Training history, current capacity, medical restrictions, and goals matter. An experienced older adult and a new younger exerciser can require different starting decisions that cannot be made from age alone.
Read our starting-after-40 guide for practical questions rather than a universal age-based prescription.
Myth: Women Cannot Build Meaningful Muscle
Women can train for strength and muscle growth. Individual outcomes differ, and a trainer should not promise that hormones make growth impossible or assign every woman a light-weight routine to avoid an assumed unwanted appearance.
Our beginner women’s strength guide focuses on individual goals and appropriate instruction.
Myth: More Soreness Means More Progress
Discomfort is not a reliable score for training quality. Record the exercise, workload, and response. A useful practice session may not make you sore, while severe symptoms can require medical attention.
Do not treat every ache as normal adaptation or use pain medication to override a movement that needs assessment.
Myth: Progress Requires a Heavier Weight Every Visit
Learning technique, adding a controlled repetition, or maintaining an appropriate workload can all be reasonable decisions. A single fixed repetition range is not required for every exercise or goal.
Our progression guide explains how to choose the next step without constant personal-record attempts.
