A crisp sourdough sandwich with cheddar and a small amount of honey. Enjoy it as a recipe rather than labeling it a guaranteed fitness food or something that must be earned through exercise.
Yield: 4 sandwiches. The previous per-sandwich calorie figure was not independently verified. Bread size, cheese, and cooking fat can materially change nutrition.
Ingredients
- 8 slices whole-grain sourdough bread
- 8 ounces sharp cheddar, sliced or shredded
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons softened butter or olive oil
- Optional: thin apple slices or a small handful of baby spinach
Method
- Arrange four bread slices. Divide the cheddar among them and drizzle each with 1 1/2 teaspoons of honey, using the full 2 tablespoons across all four sandwiches.
- Add optional apple or spinach and top with the remaining bread. Lightly spread or brush the outside surfaces with the cooking fat.
- Warm a skillet or griddle over medium-low to medium heat. Cook sandwiches in batches, turning carefully, until both sides are golden and the cheese is melted.
- Reduce the heat if the bread is browning before the center warms. Let the sandwich rest briefly before cutting and serving.
Serving Options
Pair with vegetables, fruit, soup, or another accompaniment you enjoy. The appropriate serving depends on your needs and the rest of the meal. Thin bread or less cheese is an option, not a requirement that makes the original recipe unacceptable.
Check wheat and milk allergens and the ingredients in any substitution. A bread’s sourdough label does not automatically mean it is gluten-free.
Safety Notes
Do not serve honey to a child younger than twelve months; the CDC advises avoiding honey during the first year. For children, also consider suitable texture and serving size.
Refrigerate perishable leftovers promptly rather than leaving sandwiches out all afternoon. Follow USDA leftover guidance.
